35 BIOFILM ALLIANCE WEBSITE To date, the Biofilm Alliance has delivered a focused programme of activity to strengthen evidence, collaboration, capability, and impact across biofilm research, regulation, and industrial application: • A comprehensive data collection and gap analysis was undertaken to identify biofilm‑associated challenges across sectors. Surveys and workshops generated a combined dataset representing industry, academia, and regulatory perspectives. • The Biofilm Alliance maintains a high level of stakeholder collaboration, engaging closely with regulators, industry, standardisation bodies, and international partners through site visits, advisory roles, joint proposals, and collaborative training development. This engagement supports alignment between research, regulation, and industrial need, and has been informing regulatory discussions, funding bids, and policy‑relevant activity within a One Health context. • Three major cross‑sector events were delivered, including the Workshop on Biofilms Methods and Regulations in Food Sector (March 2025, Nottingham), Biofilm Alliance Forum (July 2025, Manchester) and the Biofilm Alliance Conference (October 2025, Birmingham), bringing together academia, industry, and regulators to address biofilm challenges. These events generated published reports capturing key insights and actionable recommendations to support regulatory science, innovation, and improved biofilm management. • In partnership with The National Measurement Laboratory (NML) and The National Physical Laboratory, the Biofilm Alliance delivered also targeted training in metrology, statistics, and method validation, reaching over 180 participants. This strengthened cross‑sector capability in measurement quality, data reproducibility, and confidence in biofilm‑related testing for regulatory and industrial applications. • An expertise register and tools repository have been initiated as strategic assets to strengthen long‑term capability and coordination across the Biofilm Alliance. The expertise register provides structured visibility of specialist skills, facilities, and regulatory knowledge across academia, industry, and policy, enabling effective matchmaking and rapid mobilisation of expertise. In parallel, the tools repository will be progressively populated to provide shared access to biofilm‑related methods, guidance, standards‑relevant tools, and training resources, supporting consistency, reproducibility, and cross‑sector knowledge exchange. The Biofilm Alliance continues to focus on supporting the development of biofilm-specific standards and methodologies across sectors, expanding international engagement and delivering training to stakeholders, and advancing knowledge on biofilm management. Through continued involvement with BSI, IBRG and the EU Biofilm Regulatory Toolbox Network, it will strengthen alignment between research, industry and regulation, enabling the translation of evidence into harmonised standards, guidance and real-world application, supporting NBIC’s strategic mission to ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of biofilm research, regulation and innovation.
